Gansu province is briefly named Gan or Long, with Lanzhou as its provincial seat. Gansu is a newly emerged industrial base, an important base of petroleum industry, nonferrous metals, iron and steel industry and chemical industry. It is the major processing base for oil from Xinjiang. Gansu is also a major production region and a processing base of nickel and aluminum. Jiuquan Space Center is the first constructed among the three Chinese space bases.
In 2012, Gansu’s GDP totaled 5569 billion yuan.
Gansu has a developed tourism industry with many sightseeing places. The exotic sceneries of the high mountains in the grand desert area are very fascinating, with the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, the Qilian Mountain, Buddha-Labrang Monastery and Maiji Mountain well-known inside and outside the country. Due to the low precipitation and abundant sunshine, melons and fruits grown here in land with water source are of very high quality. The famous Bailan Melon of Lanzhou and the honey peach of Qin’an are sold to many faraway cities in the country. Jingning Apple enjoys high popularity in the country. The undertakings of culture, education, sports, health and scientific research have developed relatively fast. People’s living standards have been raised markedly.
